1st June 2008 - Jon Underwood - Hayes & Southall

June 1st was the John Underwood Memorial Meeting at Buckland in Berkshire.
In the previous week I had been contacted by Supercars UK, who informed me that after consulting Richard Smith (who is currently sidelined injured) they would like to assist me with my racing. This was a massive boost in confidence for me as it proved that people have belief and confidence in me.
I arrived early to ensure that we could get the bike set up ready for me and for the day ahead. I felt comfortable on the bike during both practises and it was then a case of just waiting for the races to start.
Going down the back straight for the first time in race one I found myself is second place only just behind the leader. Whilst looking to overtake the leader (Tim Nobes) he pulled up with engine problems which left me with a clear track ahead. In the final lap I was put under pressure by Jamie Rodgers but was able to keep the lead and win. In my second race I made a very good gate and led from the start. I was able to stretch my lead on the straights and was able to win the race quite comfortably. Two wins from two races – It was looking good. In the third and final heat I was in second position going into the first bend but by taking the outer line was able to exit it in the lead. This is where I stayed for the remainder of the race. Heading into the Semi Final I was the only rider unbeaten on the day. In my Semi Final I was second to Richard Ashcroft. He beat me into the first bend and although I pushed hard throughout the race I was happy with second. Going into the final I was tied with Jamie Rodgers on points 46 points. Whoever won the final would win the meeting. We both gated well but he was able to get into the bend first and then was able to keep a tight line which made it difficult to get by. I finished second in the race and second overall. This I was very pleased with especially as it was the first time that I had ridden that particular bike. The racing was competitive and fast which was very entertaining for the spectators.
I have a week off now in order to prepare for the British Under 21 Championship so I will see you there!
